Vision

Healing soil, community and soul

In the heart of Madeira’s rural landscape, a silent transformation has taken place over the last few decades. The golden terraces that once pulsed with the rhythm of the seasons have largely faded, and with them, the deep-seated traditions of wheat cultivation. Today, much of the wheat grown on the island is relegated to animal feed, as market prices fail to honour the arduous labour of mountain agriculture. This has led to a profound disconnect: the few artisans who still master the ancestral art of rolling cuscuz now often rely on refined, imported flour, severing the vital link between the craft and our local terroir.

This shift represents a rupture of both the ecological and social fabric. In the past, the wheat cycle—from the ceifa (reaping) to the debulha (threshing)—was the cornerstone of rural sociability, a sacred time of mutual dependence and shared sweat. As these practices declined, the “community soul” fragmented, leaving a landscape that is often biologically and socially impoverished.

To reverse this decline, we propose a circular economy designed for regeneration. Our vision is to transform cuscuz from a fading relic into the centrepiece of a vibrant, localized ecosystem through Integrated Regenerative Tourism (IRT). By developing high-value experiences centred on the “path of the grain”, we generate the capital necessary to revitalize the entire value chain.

In this model, tourism acts as a catalyst for restoration. Visitors do not merely consume a meal; they invest in the recovery of a landscape and a lifestyle. This allows for a “fair price” mechanism: rewarding farmers to cultivate indigenous wheat and honouring cuscuz masters for their irreplaceable craftsmanship. Through this journey, we initiate a profound healing process: we heal the soil through organic practices, we heal the community by rebuilding bonds of interdependence, and we heal the soul of Madeira by ensuring its heritage remains a living, breathing bond between its people and the land.
